St Josephs College Proposed Development

Members may be aware that St Josephs College have submitted planning permission to build a number of homes on their site.  These proposals include a road built alongside the club boundary.

Having reviewed the plans the Management Committee will be submitting an objection as we feel that some the proposals could have a  detrimental effect on our outside space, members using the space and also the residents of these new properties over looking a well used sports pitch. We are also concerned about traffic implications for Belstead road. We would encourage our members and guests  to take a look at the plans and associated documents on the Ipswich Borough Council website, to review the drawings and the potential impact on the local area.  The documents can be found by clicking here and using ref 21/00787/LBC

We will also have a copy of the drawings and documents available at club. Responses to the plans should be submitted by the 16th August. 

Monday 19th July easing of regulations update

The Prime Minister made it very clear in his recent announcement (12 Jul 21) that the pandemic is still with us, and we are aware that in Ipswich we are seeing cases rise and some hospitality venues closing due to staff having to isolate.

Whilst most legal restrictions will be removed from Monday, the PM also emphasised that the responsibility sits with all of us to do our best to keep everyone as safe as possible.

Whilst we will try to revert to as “normal” operation in the club as possible, to do our bit we will still have some restrictions in place from next Monday.

* we are asking all customers to continue to check in using Track and Trace – this is the quickest way to help the community and NHS by tracking contacts and cases.

* there are no restrictions on group sizes, but we do ask that furniture is not moved to form very large groups inside. If you wish to move furniture please check with a member of bar staff.

* table service will no longer be a legal requirement and we will be asking people to queue at the bar and simply Ts counter for service. However, please do be aware of others, maintain distance and do not lean over the bar.

* please do not stand at the bar unless waiting to be served.

* we are asking that people please remain seated while drinking inside, and limit movement between tables.

To help prevent the spread of the virus we will continue to clean and sanitise the bar and tables regularly. Our staff may also choose to continue to wear face coverings but we are leaving this decision very much to them.

Please also be aware that due to restrictions easing we will begin to hire out the main bar again. On these occasions members will be able to access the outside seating via the changing room corridors.

All measures will be continually reviewed, including opening hours, and we welcome feedback from our members on measures in place.

Sunday 11th July

We’ve got lots on this Sunday. If you plan to join us please be aware that Andrew Spall – Singer performs between 2pm & 5pm. This is free to attend and everyone is welcome!

We’re fully booked for the England v Italy Euro 2020 Final, and thank everyone who has contacted us to book a table – reserved tables will be available from 6pm.

If you have a table booked and no longer need it, or have fewer people joining you then booked for please do let us know as we currently have a waiting list for tables.

We hate to ask people to leave but due to the Euro final we kindly ask that anyone who doesn’t have a table reserved for football moves from any inside seating by 6pm on Sunday – you are welcome to stay outside as long as you wish.

Please remember that the club is in a residential area. When outside of an evening or leaving the club please try to keep noise to a minimum

Saturday 3rd July- Table availability update

⚽️ If you visit the club before this time please feel free to use any table but please do vacate it by 530 if it is not yours. This will enable us to clean and sanitise ahead of the evening booking

Euros – England game table bookings

⚽️⚽️ The Euros are coming! ⚽️⚽️

Due to social distancing requirements reducing capacity of our bar space we will be taking bookings for tables for the England games in the upcoming Euro 2020 competition.

The dates of the groups fixtures are:
⚽️Sunday 13th June England v Croatia at 2pm
⚽️Friday 18th June England v Scotland at 8pm
⚽️Tuesday 22nd June Englav Czech Republic at 8pm

Tables are available for a maximum of 6 people (or 2 households) and  can be booked via email (hello ) or the contact us form on our website only.  Please do not ring the club to book – bar staff will not be able to access the bookings sheet and our Facebook messages are not always notified.

When contacting us please advise which game you wish to book for and how many seats you require.

Please note at the current time tables in the members bar will be available on a first come first served basis, but social distancing requirements and capacity of the room may result in walk ins being turned away if we are full.

(IF social distancing requirements are changed ahead of the 22nd June match we will update available table numbers based on room capacity.)

Champions League Final – 29 May 2021

On Saturday we will be showing the Champions league final on the big screen in the main bar. Due to social distancing requirements reducing capacity of the room we will be taking bookings for tables.

Tables are available for a maximum of 6 people per table and will be available from 630pm until the end of the match. Simply Ts Catering will be open offering a small snack menu and there will be a drink deal available for members also – details to follow.

Membership weekend – have a drink on us!

On the 15th and 16th May the club will open between 12pm & 4pm with outside seating for drinks and membership renewals. If you join the club or renew your membership that weekend we would like to give you a drink on us while you are there to say thank you.

Terms and conditions of offer

– Drink is to be taken at time of renewal  – available between 12:00-16:00 on the 15th and 16th May 2021 only
– free drink is limited to one per adult member and are non transferable
– free drink can be chosen from from a selection of draught beer, lager & cider, draught soft drinks or a small wine only.
– free drinks cannot be saved for future use

We are reopening! May 2021

We are pleased to be able to let you all know that subject to confirmation of the next step in the Government’s roadmap going ahead the club will reopen, with inside seating, from Monday 17th May. We will also open for outside drinks only on the 15th and 16th May between 12pm & 4pm each day.
Opening hours from the 17th May will be:

Monday – Thursday    4pm – 8pm
Friday                          4pm – midnight
Saturday                     12pm – 9pm 
Sunday                       12pm – 1030pm

As with the situation prior to the lockdown closures, bar staff will be given permission to close the club early should there be no customers .  Therefore if you are planning on visiting within an hour of closing time feel free to call ahead and check we are still open.

Please do follow the guidelines detailed within the club, wear a mask when not seated at your tables and remember it is table service only both inside and out – staff will be working as fast as they can to serve everyone, but at times there may be a wait.

Prices – May 2021

We are really looking forward to welcoming our members and guests back, and seeing the club busy again. 


Before we open we feel  that it’s only fair to advise all our members and guests of the need to increase some prices.


Last year we were notified by Greene King that as from 7th September 2020, the price of all wines and spirits supplied by them was going to increase by 3%.  We didn’t increase prices at time as we had already undertaken a stock review in the summer. However, prices have since gone up again with an announcement from the brewery in Mid-April that they, and their third party suppliers, would be increasing prices from the 1st May 2021. We have also seen an increase in other significant costs such as cleaning products, energy costs and the minimum wage. 


Due to the combination of all these increases, coupled with the closures over the last year, we unfortunately need to review and increase some of our prices when we reopen.  This review has been taken into account across all areas of the business and will see an increase to the room hire fees as well as some drink prices –  although memberships will remain static for now, the price of these may need to be reviewed with an amendment proposed at a future AGM.

An update from the Management Committee, March 2021

We hope everyone is keeping safe and well. It’s been a while since we’ve written, and what a strange few months it’s been since we were last open.

It’s hard to believe that we served our last pint at the club on the 4th November!  With the Government roadmap out of lockdown now published we are beginning to look to the future and reopening the club. We don’t have a set date for this as yet, but it’s likely to be May once indoor seating is permitted as we just don’t feel it would be viable to open for outdoor seating only at the current time. We will advise of a date, and opening hours, as soon as we have a confirmed reopening plan in place.

When we reopen we are aware that a number of social members will have memberships due for renewal that expire end of March 2021 and we wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone who renewed memberships last year – we know that you didn’t get to use them as much as any of us would have liked but those renewals made a massive difference to our survival during a turbulent year.  Whilst we have been able to make use of the Government’s job retention scheme, and benefitted from a small amount from the Local Restrictions Support Grants, these grants in no way cover all the expenditure while closed and your memberships have enabled us to keep our heads above water.  As well as decorating some of the internal spaces last year, we have worked to make sure the club is covid compliant and made some improvements to the club to aid social distancing and the longer term use of the outside space with the widening of the patio last summer and the purchase of new patio heaters for when we can reopen.

When we reopen we will resume our popular events and have a summer date with Andy Otley in the diary ready, along with other plans underway- we can’t wait to be busy again!

Club to remain closed for now

Following today’s announcement we now have confirmation that Suffolk will be in Tier 2 of the government’s COVID-19 restrictions when the current lockdown ends next week. 

Due to this we have had to take the difficult decision not to reopen the club next week.  As we do not serve food all the time, we are not in a position to meet the requirements for serving alcohol and it is not viable for us to open for a few hours each week around our food service times.

We are sure many of our members and guests are as disappointed as us, that we are unable to operate when other venues can. It is a difficult time for many businesses and when we are able to reopen we will, of course, communicate this to everyone. 

We are grateful to everyone who supported us when we reopened in the summer and we hope we can be there to welcome you all back again soon.

A temporary pause….

Following the Government announcement yesterday we will be closing our doors on Wednesday until we are told we can reopen. Between now and 10pm on Wednesday 4th November we will be selling draught beers and lagers at just £2.50 a pint whilst stocks last.

I’m sure everyone will understand that we now won’t be putting our Children’s Christmas afternoon tea tickets on sale in November, but we will be keeping a close eye on guidelines and reviewing whether this event, and others , will still be possible. Likewise our AGM is due at the end of the month and we will update members as soon as we can on how this will be held.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us since reopening in July, we look forward to seeing you all again when it’s safe to do so.

Christmas Events

We knows its only October, but we were sad at having to cancel our upcoming events so have been been planning with Simply T’s Catering and have two dates for your diary:

🎄Saturday 19th December – Simply T’s will be offering a Christmas dinner

🎄Sunday 20th December – We know how much our younger members enjoy our Christmas parties and will be as disappointed as us at not seeing DJ Hamster this year, so instead we will be having a family festive tea. This will include a Simply T’s Christmas afternoon tea for the children and their grown ups, and an activity bag and gift for children.

Both events will be limited in numbers and pre booking will be required. Keep an eye on our social media, website and the email newsletter landing in your inboxes soon for more details on each event including when it will be possible to book.
